Set of Six Medieval Columns
English,
1500-1525
Oak.
For the serious collector. The V & A has six similar columns, a pair and four singles, none of which have bestiary finials. ( cat.331-335, see C. Tracey, 1988, p. 202-3.) A set of six is very rare.
Finely carved with a variety of patterns, some with finials of bestiary figures.
Probably from the corners of a hexagonal pulpit or font.
Losses, splits but no restoration.
Approx 51" (5); 23-1/2" (1), 2" wide.
